Frequently Asked I.L.L.
Questions: |
|
What
is an interlibrary loan? |
|
An interlibrary loan is
a transaction in which
library material, or a
copy of the material, is
made available by one
library to another upon
request.
Through interlibrary
loan service, eligible
borrowers may access
material not owned by
this Library. When you
turn in an interlibrary
loan request, Squires
Library attempts to
borrow or obtain a
photocopy of the needed
material from another
library.

|
|
What
types of materials are
available? |
|
The conditions of loan
services are set by
national, regional, and
state codes as well as
by policies of
individual lending
libraries. Most
libraries normally loan
books and photocopies of
articles. Other types
of items may not be
available. The
following materials are
usually not
loaned:
-
Books - published
the same year as the
request
-
Periodicals - whole
volumes or issues
-
Audiovisual
materials
(phonograph records,
CDs, cassette tapes,
videos, software,
photographs, film)
-
Bulky, fragile, or
oversized materials
that are expensive
or difficult to pack
-
Rare material,
including
manuscripts
-
Genealogical and
other similar
materials
-
Dissertations (Many
American and
Canadian
dissertations are
only available by
purchase.)
If you need any of these
materials, please
inquire at the Reference
Desk for
assistance: (423)
614-8562.

How much
does it cost? |
|
Most of the time there
is no charge to borrow
books or to receive
articles via
interlibrary loan. For
rare or
difficult-to-obtain
materials, the lending
library may charge a
photocopying or handling
fee, which would then be
passed along to you.

|
When can
I expect to receive
requested materials? |
|
Depending on the
location of requested
items and the method of
delivery, materials
usually arrive within
two weeks.
Journal articles
that are available
electronically may
arrive in just a few
days. Squires Library
processes Interlibrary
loan requests promptly.
If the Library has not
received materials by
the final date you have
indicated when you can
use them, the request
will be canceled.
